This image is from a purely Lagrangian high-order finite element simulation of a multi-material, triple-point, shock hydrodynamics problem. The high-order discretization is more accurate, supports highly curved zones and enables sub-zonal resolution of the shock waves, which is simply not possible with a low-order method. The simulation was performed using the LLNL-developed BLAST code.
