Data science has become an essential discipline paving the path of LLNL’s key program areas, and the Laboratory is home to some of the largest, most unique, and most interesting data and supercomputers in the world. The Data Science Institute (DSI) is the central hub for all data science activity at LLNL working to help lead, build, and strengthen the data science workforce, research, and outreach to advance the state-of-the-art of our nation’s data science capabilities.
Visualization and Scientific Data Analysis
We provide tools and technology to enable scientists and engineers to gain understanding and exploit their data, whether it comes from large-scale simulations or extreme-scale sensor technologies. We created and continue to develop VisIt, a full-featured, cutting-edge visualization and analysis application that is scalable to tens of thousands of cores and is capable of analyzing and visualizing extreme-scale simulations. In addition, we have a world-class research group that is advancing the state of the art in extreme-scale data streaming, uncertainty visualization and analysis, topological and feature-based analysis, and high performance video processing and analysis for multi-gigapixel sensors. New year, new hackathon! The January 30–31 event was Computing’s 23rd hackathon and the 1st scheduled in the winter season.
After years of preparation, LLNL’s upgraded Ares code runs a 98-billion-element simulation on 16,384 GPUs on the Sierra supercomputer.
