GDO Hardware and System

GDO consists of two Grid Interface Front-End Nodes (GrIFENs), a switch, and seven Scalable Storage Units (SSUs). The GrIFENs are Sun Galaxy 4 hosts running the Solaris 10 operating system. The nodes employ 64-bit AMD Opterons and each has 8 dual-core CPUs and 64GB of RAM. The SSUs are from Sun/StorageTek and provide a combined capacity of 620TB of RAID storage. The ZFS file system is used for partitioning and managing the RAID storage. Solaris zones will be used to create one or more virtual hosts for each project. This lets each project have its own IP addresses, run their own services, and do so in such a way as to not interfere with other projects. Fair share resource management will be used to prevent one project from hogging resources to the exclusion of other projects. In summary:

GDO Front-End Nodes (2)

  • Sun Fire x4600 (8 Dual-Core AMD Opteron - Model 885)
  • Solaris 10 x64
  • ZFS
  • Solaris containers (virtualization): gives each project their own IP address, services, quotas

GDO Scalable Storage Units (7)

  • Each SSU has ~89TB; ~ 623TB total usable space
  • Based on Sun FlexLine 380
  • Total of 1,536 500GB SATA drives
