Topology of High-Dimensional Function

Topological terrains like the one shown here provide an intuitive method of exploring and visualizing high-dimensional functions. For example, the terrain above has the same topology as the three-dimensional charge density of a methane molecule. The teal minimum, clearly visible in the terrain, represents the carbon atom while the maxima are due to hydrogen atoms (two maxima per hydrogen). Note that the terrain immediately highlights which features are due to maxima or minima of the field and their relative strength.
