Program Options
What will I work on?
You’ll be assigned to a specific project guided by a mentor. Projects are carefully selected to complement students’ education and skills. Assignments span a broad range of expertise and topics, including computational modeling, computational biology, laser control systems, computer security, computer networking, programming environments, parallel computing, numerical methods, visualization, and data mining.
Are there other internship opportunities at LLNL?
In addition to Computing Scholars, LLNL offers a variety of internally sponsored and externally sponsored internships for both graduate and undergraduate students.
Timeline & Selection
What’s the timeline for selection and hiring?
We review summer applications starting in the fall, with most selections in January and February. Once selected, hiring typically takes 6-8 weeks (this process may be longer for international students).
How will I know if I’m selected?
You’ll be contacted by LLNL staff and provided information about the next steps in the process.
How many interns do you hire, and what’s the pay like?
Pay is competitive with industry and typically exceeds academic internships.
How long are internships?
Internships typically last 10–12 weeks and may be extended through the academic year.
Working in Livermore
Workplace Details
What are the work hours?
Typically, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Alternative schedules may be available with supervisor approval.
What is the dress code?
Business casual. This is a professional environment.
Do I need a badge to enter the Livermore campus? What types of IDs are required?
Visit the badge office on your first day to receive your badge. See the Visiting the Lab page for information about acceptable forms of ID.
How often will I receive feedback or evaluations?
Your mentor will hold weekly check-ins to support your project progress. However, these are informal and not official performance evaluations.
Are there social events?
We plan seminars, tours, social gatherings, and networking opportunities to enhance your internship experience.
Are there fitness facilities?
The Lab offers many options for employees to engage in healthy lifestyle activities. Onsite amenities include gym facilities, basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts, walking paths, and free bicycles for use onsite. Will there be an opportunity to tour the Livermore campus as part of onboarding? Are there opportunities to get to know technical staff or other students across the Lab?
Yes! Throughout your internship, you’ll have opportunities to engage with LLNL through tours, seminars, and networking events. These may be in-person, hybrid, or virtual and include activities organized by the Computing Scholar Program, division meetings, and Lab-wide events.
Housing & Commute
Is there a housing network for interns or recommendations for housing?
No. Students are responsible for securing their own housing accommodations. See the LLNL Students site for links to various options.
How do I commute to the Lab daily? Are there any bus services to the Lab?
Yes. Depending on your location, there are public transportation options available, including city buses and the ACE train, which provide service to Livermore.
How do I find other information about housing and transportation?

Technology & Equipment
Will I be provided a laptop for this role?
Yes, onsite scholars will be issued a work laptop. Peripherals and other equipment are available onsite for use.
If I’m onsite can I bring my personal laptop (or other devices)?
Yes, you can bring personal devices, but they cannot be used for official LLNL work or connected to the ethernet. While onsite, taking photos with your personal phone is strictly prohibited.
Are there additional peripherals provided for hybrid work?
No. While your Lab-issued laptop will include a built-in camera, extra peripherals (such as monitors, keyboards, or headsets) are not provided for students working from home.
Travel, Reimbursement, & Relocation
When should I book my flight?
You should wait to book your travel until you have received your official offer letter and the Scholar Travel Guide. This guide includes information on travel requirements such as booking through American flag carriers, car shipments, mileage, hotel stays, and more. Booking through American carriers is required for reimbursement.
How does travel reimbursement work, and how much will I be reimbursed?
Please direct all travel and relocation questions to the Talent Acquisition team. If applicable, you will be eligible for reimbursement after your start date—reimbursements are not processed beforehand. Per federal and state law, all moving and relocation reimbursements are considered taxable income.
I have a temporary address right now. Will I need to provide my permanent one?
You can update your address in our internal system after your internship begins, which is required for tax purposes.
Remote Scholars
If I am primarily remote, is there an option to visit the Lab?
Yes, remote interns are welcome to visit the Lab during their internship. Please coordinate any visits with your mentor in advance before making any travel arrangements and to determine whether travel is reimbursable.
Will I be using my personal laptop?
Yes, remote students are expected to utilize their personal laptop for the duration of their internship. You will have Virtual Private Network (VPN) access through your assigned Amazon Workspace/LivCloud Desktop. Additional peripherals for remote students will not be provided. You must have Windows 10 version 1909 or Mac OS 10.15 or higher. Chromebooks are not supported.
